THE 3 DAY WALK FOR THE CURE. Wow is mostly what I have to say! The first time I can remember anything like this happening was at Chrissy Field on the Presideo and Rose was involved. It was a short run around the field as I remember. Since then, the Susan B Komen campaigns for breast cancer awareness has grown in every way.
Rachael (youngest daughter) participated this year in honor of Rose mainly. And, quite an achievement. I don't quite know how to describe it. It is 60 miles in three days. There's camping, walking, bonding, walking, cheering, walking. It happened in San Fran, Oakland, Marin County, golden Gate Bridge, walking, cheering.
And, there's those of us trying to support. There's husbands, children, friends, parents. There are policement escorting, giving up their days off; a group of motorcycle riders who stop at intersections, play music, exhorting and encouraging "on." And, there's the "walkers." They walk because they are survivors, friends of survivors, friends of those who didn't survive. And, then there's the money raised for cancer research. Each participant had a stated goal. Rachael met hers. Way to go to all!!!!!
It started Friday morning, delivering Rachael to the starting point where she meets the three members of her team. The first cheering point is my favorite beach, Ocean Beach. I arrived early and got caught up in the cheering. The participants are walking on the sidewalks, not in the traffic. Drivers are blowing horns, thumbs up. Suddenly everybody who is breathing is saying, "way to go." Then it is the next cheering spot at Alta Bates Plaza. This great park with breathtaking views of The City. Meg, my oldest daughter, joins me. We cheer them on. Great! At some point, they are ferried to Treasure Island for the night. Day two takes the "walkers" to Berkeley and Oakland where Lupe, my grand daughter and I catch up to them. We cheer. I actually almost lose my voice. Rachael has a few blisters. She soldiers on. Great time!
Today is 9-11. Seems appropriate that the THREE DAY WALK FOR THE CURE be happening on this day. A celebration and not a tragedy. HooAhhhhhh
