Cancer is such an insidious disease. Hanging out at Mount Zion (where Rose got her treatment and one of the top ten cancer hospitals in America) and seeing all these folks fighting for their lives is both sad and inspirational. Friday is a busy day at the Infusion Center as is probably every day. I'm talking to one of my former parishioners who is fighting. We have a great conversation. We talk affectionately about our former church and recall a couple of funny stories. One had to do with a funeral where the deceased was a great guy and somewhat of a barfly. Since I didn't know him all that well, I was stumbling around, not knowing what to say. As it turns out, the best lines were delivered by someone in attendance. I said, "those of you who would like to maybe say a word about John (not his real name) stand up where you are and comment." One or two stood and then the bartender at one of the bars said, "I'd like to say a word in John's behalf. He was a great guy, always friendly. He would see the women sitting at the bar and it didn't make any difference how many, he would buy them a drink and then he would 'do' them." The entire church erupted in laughter, including yours truly. This turned out to be a fun funeral.
